Creating a Trusted Infrastructure Baseline for Future Modernization Initiatives

Argent Energy, one of the UK's leading biodiesel producers, sought to establish a reliable digital foundation for an existing production facility as part of its long-term infrastructure modernization journey.

Like many brownfield industrial sites, infrastructure information had evolved over time through modifications, operational changes and maintenance activities. Before future digitalization and modernization initiatives could be considered, the organization first needed an accurate understanding of existing field conditions.

Virtual Plant® was selected to create a comprehensive reality-capture baseline of the facility and support future infrastructure validation activities.

The Challenge

Industrial facilities often depend on engineering documentation that may no longer fully reflect actual field conditions. As facilities evolve over decades, maintaining alignment between engineering information and physical infrastructure becomes increasingly difficult.

To improve infrastructure visibility and establish a trusted starting point for future initiatives, Argent Energy required a scalable and accurate representation of existing site conditions.

The Solution

Virtual Plant® performed a comprehensive reality-capture campaign using engineering-grade laser scanning technologies across the facility.

The resulting spatial dataset created a highly accurate digital representation of existing infrastructure that could be used as the foundation for future engineering validation and infrastructure intelligence activities.

The captured environment enabled remote infrastructure review and established a trusted reference point between field reality and engineering information.

Key Use Case: Infrastructure Data Validation

One of the primary objectives of the project was to establish the foundation for future infrastructure validation activities.

By creating an accurate representation of existing field conditions, engineering teams can compare infrastructure reality against engineering documentation, identify discrepancies and improve confidence in critical infrastructure information.

This creates the first step toward building a connected and trusted infrastructure intelligence environment.
