Building Infrastructure Intelligence for Critical Gas Infrastructure

As part of OMV's global DigitUP initiative, a gas compressor station was selected to establish a trusted digital foundation for future digitalization and infrastructure modernization activities.

The objective was not simply to digitize existing information, but to verify whether infrastructure data accurately reflected field reality. Before advanced digital initiatives can succeed, organizations must first ensure that engineering information, asset data and infrastructure documentation can be trusted.

Virtual Plant® supported this initiative by combining reality capture, engineering validation and infrastructure intelligence workflows to create a reliable baseline for future digital transformation efforts.

Industry Challenge

Digitalization Depends on Data Quality

Many industrial organizations invest heavily in digital initiatives while continuing to rely on engineering information that may no longer reflect actual field conditions.

Years of modifications, maintenance activities and brownfield changes often create gaps between documentation and reality. As a result, asset registers, P&IDs, isometrics and infrastructure records can become inconsistent over time.

For critical infrastructure operators, trusted data is not only an engineering challenge — it is the foundation for every future digital initiative.

Virtual Plant® helps bridge this gap by validating infrastructure information against reality and creating a connected infrastructure intelligence environment.

Reality Capture & Infrastructure Intelligence

Engineering-grade laser scanning was performed to establish an accurate digital representation of existing site conditions. The captured environment created a trusted reference point for future validation and engineering activities while improving remote accessibility of infrastructure information.

Underground Infrastructure Intelligence

Understanding what exists below ground is often as important as understanding what exists above it. The project combined underground intelligence methodologies with engineering interpretation workflows to improve visibility of buried infrastructure and support future project readiness.

Engineering Data Validation

P&IDs, asset registers and isometric information were reviewed against actual field conditions to identify discrepancies and improve confidence in infrastructure records. This process helped establish a more reliable infrastructure baseline while supporting long-term data quality objectives.

Customer Story

The First Step of a Larger Digitalization Journey

As one of the first initiatives within a broader corporate digitalization program, the project focused on a fundamental question:

Can future digital initiatives rely on existing infrastructure data?

By combining reality capture, underground intelligence and engineering validation, OMV established a trusted infrastructure foundation that can support future digitalization, operational improvement and modernization initiatives.

Why It Matters

Many organizations focus on software, analytics and AI before addressing the quality of the infrastructure information behind them.

This project demonstrated that successful digitalization starts with trusted infrastructure intelligence. When engineering information, asset records and field reality are aligned, organizations can move forward with significantly greater confidence in future transformation initiatives.
